Pole Attachments

Did you know it is illegal to attach items to utility poles without permission of the utility involved? According to the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 70.54.090, it is unlawful to attach to utility poles “advertising signs, posters, vending machines, or any similar objects which presents a hazard to, or endangers the lives of, electrical workers.” A person violating this section may be charged with a misdemeanor.

Customers, businesses, and other members of the public have been known to install things like security lights, cameras, and even small structures like sheds and carports to utility poles. In the event the removal of the installation requires Elmhurst’s time and equipment due to safety concerns, we will charge customers labor and materials costs to remove these illegal, unsafe attachments.

Utility poles look harmless and are such a part of our landscape that we do not always consider necessary safety precautions. This is a testament to many improvements in the delivery of electricity over the years, but also a reminder that electricity is still a deadly force we have harnessed for good but should always be treated with caution.
