Medical Equipment & Loss of Power

If you or someone you care for relies on electrically powered medical equipment, we encourage you to have a backup plan in the event of power outages.

Elmhurst takes many preventative measures such as tree trimming to ensure power is rarely interrupted for our customers. However, traffic accidents and destructive weather events result in unplanned power outages. Our crews work hard to restore power as quickly as possible to everyone, but it may take hours or longer to fully restore all power. You can prepare by talking to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.

You can request a letter from your medical provider’s office that describes your medical device and its electricity requirements. If you provide us with a copy of this letter, our Customer Service team will take extra measures to contact you and will give more time to respond to a disconnect notice. We encourage you to ensure an authorized person we may talk with in case of an emergency is listed on your account.
